If a share of your customers prefer Spanish and the person answering your phone does not speak it, some of those callers may hang up and try the next business. An AI receptionist can cover that gap, but only if it really handles Spanish well. This guide covers what to check before you trust one with your line. It is written for contractors, salons and small offices.

Disclosure: Sergii Babikov, founder of OxelLab, wrote this. We build OxelLab Assistant, and the product details come from its public pages, read on 5 Nov 2026. We have not studied how Spanish-speaking callers behave, so this is a checklist, not a result.

What OxelLab Assistant Does With Spanish

According to the product pages, the assistant answers each caller in their own language (English, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian and more) and switches automatically if the caller changes language mid-call. The Spanish use-case page says there is no separate line and no extra setup. Per the Spanish page, it takes the appointment and details in any language, and the FAQ says it books into your Google Calendar with conflict checks, and the write-up of each call comes in your language.

That last part matters for an owner who does not speak Spanish: you do not have to understand the call, because you get a transcript and a summary in your language afterwards.

What to Check Before You Trust an AI Receptionist With Spanish-Speaking Callers

  • Language switching mid-call. Some callers mix Spanish and English. Does the assistant follow, or does it lock into one language?
  • Booking in Spanish. Does it take the appointment details in Spanish and write a correct entry in your calendar, with conflict checks?
  • Names and street names. Test with real names and local street names. Names and addresses are easy to mishear, so test them first.
  • Transcripts you can read. Do you get a full transcript and a summary in your language for every call, so you can catch mistakes?
  • The voice. Can you preview voices and pick one that sounds natural to you?
  • Handing off to you. Does it take a message instead of guessing when it is unsure, and can you turn forwarding off from your phone?
  • Pricing by language. Is there a surcharge for languages other than English? OxelLab Assistant's pricing page lists one per-minute rate and no language surcharge.

How to Test It Yourself in an Afternoon

  • Set it up on your line or a dedicated number. With OxelLab Assistant you can forward your existing line in about 60 seconds, and no card is needed to start (unless you add the $10 number).
  • Ask a Spanish-speaking friend, employee or customer you trust to call and request a real booking: a service, an address, a time that conflicts with something already on your calendar.
  • Have them switch between Spanish and English partway through.
  • Read the transcript and the summary, then check the calendar entry. Note anything it got wrong, such as the greeting, prices or instructions, and fix it with the settings your provider offers.
  • Repeat with a less clear line: background noise, a fast speaker, an unusual name.

Ask your tester how the call felt: a transcript shows what was said, but only a native speaker can say whether it sounded natural.

An Illustration of the Cost

This is an illustration with made-up numbers, not a customer result. Suppose a contractor gets 10 calls a month from Spanish-speaking customers and each lasts about two minutes. At the published rate of $1.00 per minute in the US and Canada, that is 20 minutes, or about $20 plus any texts at $0.05 per text sent or received. International calls are priced differently. Our pricing page does not say how partial minutes are rounded, so treat it as approximate. Compare that figure with what one booked job is worth to you. For the full pricing logic, see our AI receptionist cost guide.

Where It Falls Short

An AI receptionist can misunderstand an unusual request, a strong accent or a noisy line, in any language. It should not be your only path for emergencies, legal matters or anything sensitive. Set it to take a message when it is unsure, read the transcripts regularly, and consider telling callers they are speaking with an AI assistant (check what your provider's greeting says). Recording and consent rules vary by state, so check what applies to you; this is general information, not legal advice. If most of your calls need a long personal conversation, a bilingual person on your team is still the better fit.

Want to see how it handles Spanish? See the Spanish answering page or try OxelLab Assistant: no card to start (a card is needed only if you add the $10 dedicated number), no contract, and you can turn call forwarding off from your phone.

One aside: if your customers also look for you online in Spanish, a phone assistant will not fix a website that only speaks English; you can scope that with us in chat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI receptionist answer in Spanish?

With OxelLab Assistant, yes. It answers in English, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian and more, and it switches to the caller's language automatically, including in the middle of a call. Whatever product you consider, test it with a real Spanish-language call before you rely on it.

Do I need a separate line for Spanish-speaking callers?

With OxelLab Assistant, no. Its use-case page describes no separate line and no extra setup for Spanish. The same number answers every caller and the assistant detects the language.

Will I be able to read what Spanish-speaking callers said?

With OxelLab Assistant you get a full transcript in your language and a short summary after every call, so you can read what was said even if you do not speak Spanish.

Does an AI receptionist replace a bilingual employee?

No. OxelLab Assistant is a first point of contact that answers, books and takes messages. Unusual, sensitive or urgent calls should be set up to take a message, you should keep a direct way for urgent callers to reach you, and you should read the transcripts, especially in the first weeks.

How much does it cost to answer Spanish-speaking callers with OxelLab Assistant?

The pricing page lists one per-minute rate and no language surcharge: $1.00 per minute of talk time in the US and Canada and $0.05 per text, with an optional dedicated number at $10 a month and no contract, as of 5 Nov 2026.
