How Much Does an AI Receptionist Cost? A Small Business Guide (2026)

With per-minute pricing, a small business that has an AI receptionist handle 40 two-minute calls a month pays about $92. Providers charge in different ways, so this guide shows how the pricing works, walks through that example using our published per-minute rates, and lists what to check before you choose. It is written for owners of contractor businesses, salons and small offices, where a missed call can be a lost job.

A note on who is writing: Sergii Babikov, founder of OxelLab. We build one, OxelLab Assistant, so the examples use our pricing. We keep the rest of the guide provider-neutral, including where an AI receptionist is the wrong tool.

What an AI Receptionist Does

An AI receptionist (also called an AI answering service, virtual receptionist or AI phone agent) answers your business phone, greets callers, answers common questions, books appointments, takes messages and sends you a summary afterwards. Unlike voicemail, the caller gets a conversation. Unlike a human answering service, it is available at any hour, including nights and weekends, and it picks up when your own line is busy.

How AI Receptionist Pricing Works

  • Per-minute pricing: you pay for the minutes the assistant spends on calls. Usage charges follow your call volume, with no usage charge when the phone is quiet. Fixed fees such as a phone number still apply.
  • Monthly plans with included minutes: a fixed fee covers a set number of minutes, with extra minutes billed on top. Easier to budget if your volume is steady.
  • Add-ons: a dedicated phone number, text messages, extra languages, integrations and features such as call recording can each be priced separately.

For OxelLab Assistant, pricing is per minute: $1.00 per minute of talk time in the US and Canada, $0.05 per text sent or received, and an optional dedicated number at $10 a month. International calls are priced differently, so see the OxelLab Assistant pricing page; the figures here are as of 30 Oct 2026. There is no contract and no minimum: you pay for talk time and texts, plus $10 a month only if you add a dedicated number. Monthly plans with included minutes are coming but are not available yet.

A Worked Monthly Example

This is an illustration with made-up call volumes, not a customer result. Say a small service business gets 40 calls a month that the assistant handles, and a typical call lasts about two minutes:

  • 40 calls × 2 minutes = 80 minutes × $1.00 = $80
  • Dedicated number (optional): $10
  • Texts at $0.05 each, say 40 call-summary texts if you choose to receive them by text: $2

That is roughly $92 in the month. At the low end, 15 two-minute calls is 30 minutes, about $30 plus $1 in texts, and the $10 number is optional because you can forward your existing line instead. A busy month costs more: 100 two-minute calls with a text summary for each is 200 minutes plus $5 in texts, or roughly $215 with the number. Because billing is per minute, your cost rises with call time. Plug in your own numbers: calls per month × average minutes × the per-minute rate, plus any fixed fees. Our pricing page does not say how partial minutes are rounded, so treat any estimate as approximate. Then compare the result with what one missed job is worth to you, and with what you pay now for voicemail or an answering service.

Want to see it work on your line? Try OxelLab Assistant: no card is needed to start (a card is needed only if you add the $10 dedicated number), no contract, and you can turn it off from your phone at any time.

What a Caller Experiences

The assistant picks up in a voice you choose, answers in the caller's language (English, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian and more), and can switch language during the call. It answers common questions, gives the prices you set, and books into your Google Calendar with conflict checks. When it is unsure, it takes a message and flags it for you instead of guessing. After every call you get a transcript and a summary, so you can read exactly what was said.

What to Compare Before You Choose

  • The cost per handled call, not the headline rate. A cheap plan with few included minutes can cost more than per-minute billing.
  • Languages: does it switch to the caller's language during the call?
  • Booking: does it write to your real calendar and check for conflicts?
  • Visibility: can you read a transcript and summary of every call?
  • Control: can you turn it off from your phone, or have it put a caller through to you?
  • Setup: can you forward your existing number, or must you change the number on your cards and website?
  • Contract terms: month-to-month or locked in?
  • Data handling: who processes the audio and transcripts, and can you delete them? (OxelLab lists its processors on its security page.)

Where an AI Receptionist Falls Short

An AI receptionist is not a replacement for every kind of call handling. It may misunderstand an unusual request or a strong accent, and it should not be the only option for emergencies or highly sensitive calls. A sound setup takes a message and flags it for you when it is unsure instead of guessing, and lets you review every call. Recording and consent rules also vary by state and country, so check what applies to you and your callers; this guide is general information, not legal advice.

It also does not fix a missing website. Callers who cannot reach you often look for another business online; if you need a site that turns searches into calls, see our custom website cost guide, or read how we use AI in client work in AI in web development.

Who It Fits Best

Businesses where a missed call is a lost job and the owner is often busy or away from the phone: contractors and home services, salons, and offices that get calls after hours. If you handle sensitive client or patient information, check your privacy obligations first. It is a weaker fit if most of your calls need a long, personal conversation or a judgment call that only you can make.

If a missed call costs you a job, the simplest way to find out whether this works for you is to try OxelLab Assistant: no card to start, no contract. And if you need a website or an AI agent built for your own workflow, you can scope it with us in chat.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an AI receptionist cost for a small business?

It depends on the provider and the pricing model. With OxelLab Assistant, you pay $1.00 per minute of talk time in the US and Canada plus $0.05 per text, with an optional dedicated number at $10 a month and no contract. Pricing models differ between providers, so compare the cost per call you actually expect.

Is an AI receptionist better than voicemail or an answering service?

It answers instead of taking a message, can book into a calendar and, with OxelLab Assistant, can switch to the caller's language mid-call, and it is available at any hour. It is not a person, so unusual or sensitive calls should be set up to take a message or reach you directly.

Do I need a credit card to try an AI receptionist?

With OxelLab Assistant you can start without a card by forwarding your existing line. A card is needed only if you buy the optional $10 a month dedicated number.

What happens if the AI receptionist gets something wrong?

With OxelLab Assistant you get a transcript and summary of every call, and you can correct its prices, greeting and instructions at any time. If the assistant is unsure, it takes a message and flags it for you instead of guessing.

Do I need a new phone number?

No. You can forward your existing business line to the assistant, or use a dedicated number if you prefer a separate line. You can turn forwarding off from your phone at any time and calls come straight back to you.

AI receptionist vs a human answering service: which costs less?

It depends on your call volume and how each is billed. Compare the cost per handled call, what is included, and whether each can book appointments and answer in the languages your callers speak. Use the worked example above to estimate the AI cost, and ask any human service for its per-minute or per-call pricing.

Do call-recording laws apply to an AI receptionist?

Possibly. Rules on recording and consent differ by state and country, and you are responsible for following the rules that apply to you and your callers. This is general information, not legal advice. Consider telling callers that calls are handled by an AI assistant and transcribed.
