How Much Does Custom Web Design Cost in 2026?
Custom web design costs from $750 for a landing page to about $5,000 for a 10-15 page site at our studio, and most of that spread comes from a few things: how many unique page layouts you need, how much custom work (illustration, animation, brand identity) goes into them, and whether a quote includes building the site or only designing it. Our ranges are quoted as design plus build. This guide explains what you are actually paying for and how to compare quotes without being surprised later.
These are OxelLab's typical project ranges, not industry averages, and the final number depends on your scope. That range covers most small-business sites we scope; larger or more complex work such as e-commerce and web apps is quoted separately. Our broader custom website cost guide discusses market-wide ranges including development, e-commerce and web apps, which are higher than the small-business figures here; this article focuses on the design side.
The short version:
- Landing page or single conversion site: $750-$1,500
- Small business site, about 5 pages: $1,500-$3,000
- Larger bespoke site, 10-15 pages: $3,000-$5,000
An illustrative example, not a client project: a 5-page plumber's site with Home, Services, About, Gallery and Contact usually needs only three unique layouts, so it would sit toward the lower half of the $1,500-$3,000 range.

What a Web Design Price Usually Covers
A complete design phase typically includes:
- Discovery and structure: what the site must achieve, who visits it, and which pages are needed
- Wireframes and layouts: how each unique page type is arranged, on desktop and on a phone
- Visual design: typography, color, imagery and components that match your brand
- Revisions: a defined number of feedback rounds
- Handoff: the finished design delivered in a form that can be built exactly
This is the typical list across the industry, not a statement of any one provider's process. Copywriting, photography, logo design and development are often separate line items or not included at all, so that is the first thing to check in any quote.
What Drives the Cost of Custom Web Design
- Number of unique layouts, not number of pages. Ten pages that reuse three layouts cost far less to design than ten pages that each look different.
- Custom illustration, animation and interactions. They can set a site apart, and they add design and build time.
- Brand work. If you need a logo or a full visual identity, that is a separate piece of work from the website itself.
- Content readiness. Finished text and photos make design faster. Placeholder content that changes later causes rework.
- Revision rounds and decision makers. More reviewers and more rounds mean more time.
- Design only or design and build. A design file is not a working site. If design and development are quoted by different companies, you may also pay for the handoff between them. We quote design and development together as one fixed price, so there is no handoff between companies to pay for. See our web design service and web development service.
Custom Design vs a Template
A template is a pre-made design you fill with your content. It is fast and inexpensive, and it can be the right choice for a very small site or a first version. Custom design is made around your brand and your visitors' path to contacting or buying from you. It tends to make sense when your brand needs to stand out, when your content does not fit a template's structure, or when you need layouts a template cannot provide. We compare the options in more depth in WordPress vs custom development.
What About a Freelancer or a Do-It-Yourself Builder?
For a very simple site, a freelancer or a website builder can be the right call. A useful test: if you can list the three things the site must do and none needs a custom layout, start with a template. It tends to cost more when a cheap start turns into rework, design files nobody can build, or no one to ask once the site is live. Whichever route you choose, get the scope and what happens after launch in writing.
Web Design Pricing Models: Fixed, Hourly, Retainer, Per Page
- Fixed price per project: one number for an agreed scope. Easiest to budget; it is how we quote.
- Hourly: flexible, but the total is uncertain unless the hours are capped.
- Monthly retainer: suits ongoing design work rather than a single new site.
- Per page: simple to read, but it hides how much work each page needs.
How to Compare Web Design Quotes
When two quotes differ a lot, the difference often lies in what they include. Put the quotes side by side and check:
- Is development included, or only design files?
- How many unique layouts and how many revision rounds?
- Is mobile design included as a design, or is it just "responsive"? (See why mobile-first design matters.)
- Who owns the finished files and the site?
- What happens after launch: fixes, hosting, updates, and what they cost?
We hold ourselves to the same test: our quote is a fixed price for an agreed scope, it covers design and build together, and the number does not move unless the scope moves. What is included, who owns the finished site and what happens after launch are stated in writing in the quote.
If you want a quote that spells these out, you can scope your project in chat, a short written chat with our AI assistant. We scope in writing (chat or email, no calls needed) and send a fixed quote once the scope is agreed. Rough notes are fine.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does custom web design cost?
At OxelLab, a custom-designed landing page typically costs $750-$1,500, a 5-page business site typically $1,500-$3,000, and a 10-15 page site typically $3,000-$5,000. Design and build are quoted together as one fixed price once the scope is agreed. Other providers price differently, so compare what each quote includes, not just the total.
How much does website design cost for a small business?
For a small business, a custom-designed site of about 5 pages typically costs $1,500-$3,000 at OxelLab, and a single landing page typically $750-$1,500. Check whether a quote covers design only or design plus build, and whether content, photos and revisions are included.
Is custom web design worth it compared with a template?
It depends on the job. A template is a reasonable start for a very small site with simple needs. Custom design is worth the extra cost when your brand, your conversion path or your content structure does not fit a template, or when you need layouts a template cannot provide.
What is usually included in a web design price?
Typically: discovery and a page structure, wireframes and layouts, visual design for desktop and mobile, a set number of revision rounds, and handoff of the finished design. Whether copywriting, photography, logo design and development are included varies by provider, so ask for them to be listed.
Why do web design quotes vary so much?
Quotes differ in scope (number of unique page layouts, custom illustration or animation), in what is included (content, revisions, development, launch support) and in the provider's overhead. Two quotes that look far apart often describe different work.
What should I prepare before asking for a web design quote?
A list of the pages you need, two or three sites you like, your logo and brand colors if you have them, any text and photos you already own, and your target launch date. Send what you have as it is; incomplete is fine.
